Belize's Placencia
Placencia
As with the majority of Belize, the transition between one landscape to another is more than enough to take you by surprise, and Placencia is no different. As you drive down the lush mountainous terrain of the north, you all of sudden find yourself in the flat plains and orange trees of Stann Creek Valley. The culture here is also varied from the Spanish flair of San Ignacio, whereby a distinctly Afro-caribbean feel now radiates through the air.
Set in a sheltered half moon bay, caressed by turquoise blues and palm fringed white sands, Placencia is a fishing village that could just as easily fit into the pages of a Robert Louis Stevenson novel as the southern part of Belize. Founded by pirates, Placencia boasts a population as diverse as its beautiful views. Find the Cockscomb Mountains to the west, and a series of uninhabited cayes to the east. Dive along the reef, hike through the jungle, search for Scarlet Macaws in Red Bank Village, explore Mayan ruins at Lubantuun, or simply treat yourself to some of the finest sportfishing in the country.
