Bolivia's Lake Titicaca
Lake Titicaca
Legend goes that it is within the chilly waters of Lake Titicaca, the highest navigable lake in the world, that one of the world’s greatest empires was born. Here, in the midst of the serene lake, the children of the Sun, Manco Capac, and Mama Ocllo, stepped forth from the sacred rock that still stands near the northwest tip of the Isla del Sol.
Whether it is the stories that surround it, or the snow covered peaks of the Cordillera Real that tower above it, the surreal setting of Lake Titicaca promises to leave you in a state of awe. The cool expanse of water rests undisturbed save the handful of wooden sailboats and rowboats that float peacefully by. Upon the shore sway long reeds, the material that composed the first boats to cross Lake Titicaca. Marvel at the picturesque panorama of the lake itself, or venture to the nearby lakeshore town of Copacabana, where a number of important Inca ruins, as well as the town’s landmark, the Virgin of Copacabana, continue to draw visitors from around the globe.
