Brazil's The Northeast

Olinda

The name of this Pernambuco State’s original capital is translated to “beautiful;” a name well fitting for this breathtaking area. Nestled atop forested hills and overlooking an expansive beach caressed by the cool ocean waters, Olinda is a fantastically beautiful area in which to relax amidst some of Brazil’s finest. The town’s natural beauty is well complimented by the colonial buildings painted in a full spectrum of color, a stunning slice of the old northeast. Today, Olinda stands as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and a walk along the narrow cobblestone streets will soon disclose why it is so deserving of such a title.

The town is hilly, but easy to explore on foot. Wander the streets and enjoy latticed balconies, heavy doors and stucco walls, as well as the additional charms of this city of which numerous artists, musicians and intellectuals have made their own. Plan your visit to Olinda around the splendid Carnival, which rates among the top three in Brazil; Rio’s and Salvador’s holding the other spots.
