Costa Rica's The Central Valley

The Central Valley

Characterized by rolling green hills that rise between 900 and 1200m above sea level, the Central Valley is a region of unparalleled beauty and some spectacular panoramas. The climate is mild and it feels very much like spring year-round, making the Central Valley the premier destination in which to explore some of Costa Rica’s finest. This is the country’s primary agricultural region, where coffee farms paint the rolling hillsides.

In the surrounding scenery, view the breathtaking volcanic peaks, two of which, Poas and Irazu, remain active and have caused extensive damage over the years. Throughout the valley find three provincial capitals, Alajuela, Cartago and Heredia, traversed by the oxcarts bearing sugarcane and the coffee bean carrying trucks of the neighboring villages. This is a diverse region both in topography as well as culture, and one that deserves a fair amount of exploration.
