This breathtaking archipelago situated at the southern end of Lake Nicaragua also happens to be lush natural reserve, where numerous monkeys and birds take refuge in the comfortable isolation of this area known as the Solentiname Archipelago. The result of ancient volcanic activity, and inhabited from at least AD 500, the Solentiname is well deserving of its Monumento Nacional status, and regarded as one of the most beautiful settings in Nicaragua.
Today, the islands of the archipelago are sparsely populated, and contain no roads, running water or electricity. Such a setting offers unique insight to the intrepid traveler and a glorious look into the Nicaragua of centuries past. Home to some of the country’s most talented and prolific artists, the Solentiname Archipelago resonates as much in cultural appeal as it does in natural allure.
